There is increasing interest in Lucerne, especially where farmers are looking for a break in the rotation for Red Clover. It is however not for everybody. It needs free draining soils, a high pH, and it takes 12 months to really establish. It MUST be cut at the correct time. After 1st cut this does not normally match other silage crops.
Because of production problems in Europe, variety availablilty can vary through the season. There is some testing in the UK, but the main area for production and testing is in Northern France where soils are similar to Central, East & Southern-East England. This is also the area where the crop performs best in the UK. French data has proved a reliable source of data. Our Growers' Guidelines for Lucerne can be accessed here
